The new group advances Vapor IO’s Kinetic Edge architecture, which uses software-defined interconnection and high-speed networking to combine multiple micro-data centers into a single, virtual facility.
Ciena anticipates that the Blue Planet Division will reach $50 million to $60 million in annual revenue during fiscal 2019, growing to $100 million to $120 million in 2021.
The new group’s list of founding members reads like a who’s who of chipmakers, telecommunications companies, cloud providers, edge infrastructure vendors, and others.
The product debut comes as the embattled Chinese company faces mounting political troubles and additional bans in the U.S. and Europe.
The networking-focused hardware is built for the Open19 Foundation infrastructure platform.
The year-old startup, founded by former Intel president Renee James, is also partnering with Packet, Cloudflare, and other companies on 5G and edge computing proof of concepts.
“Nobody gets to keep a lock on cloud computing,” Wasabi CEO David Friend said. “As much as Amazon would like to, it’s going to be a multi-cloud world.”
Packet is working with other tower owners besides SBA on similar projects. The company plans to install around 50 new sites.
Sprint's Aaron Hinkle also weighed in on SDN: “When you move to the edge you have to be able to do a full SDN deployment.”
The IoT platform uses virtualization to push more processing capabilities to the edge of the network and a dedicated operating system to help the platform “come alive.”
Thao Nyugen works for Packet as director of hardware platforms. Coming from Facebook, he led the development and deployment of over 1 million Open Compute Project servers in the last eight years.
The open data center effort added Packet’s CEO as a board member and will soon sell Open19 compliant servers on its online marketplace.
Tazari looks to build on Packet's bare metal cloud model, launching a working edge platform by 2019, and improving on its hardware and software offerings.
