Versa Networks’ Cloud IP Platform—a Virtualized Network Function (VNF)-based Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solution—allows service providers to deliver a comprehensive managed SD-WAN service that offers advanced connectivity and security functions. Versa Cloud IP Platform combines Versa networking and security VNFs with commodity hardware to offer managed service capabilities such as multi-tenancy, multi-service, elasticity, and zero-touch provisioning.
Breaking down the “Cloud IP Platform” name, Versa President and CEO Kelly Ahuja said that “cloud” means the functions are cloud-native, and “IP” means that the solution covers functionalities in Layer 3 through 7. One of Versa SD-WAN’s differentiating features is that it combines network and security capabilities to provide this full suite of Layer 3 to Layer 7 IP services—built on a cloud-native, multi-tenant software platform.
“We’re not just an SD-WAN company,” Ahuja said. “All of those capabilities are combined into a single piece of software that you can install in multiple places and can connect all of those with a hybrid support infrastructure. And because we have the context and analytics that we do, you can have a policy-driven environment.”
In mid-2017, Versa expanded the capabilities of its platform to include integrated Wi-Fi and Ethernet switching software, embedded LTE support, and improved security. With Versa SD-WAN, enterprises and service providers can now further reduce complexity and increase IT agility by virtualizing and software-defining the branch and WAN.
Versa SD-WAN Features
Versa’s SD-WAN solution delivers a comprehensive managed SD-WAN service that includes advanced connectivity and security functions. Other benefits include the following:
- Increased service agility. Providers can rapidly design a customized SD-WAN service that combines the primary network functions of application-aware routing, Carrier-grade NAT, and VPN, along with any incremental security functions needed—in a matter of days or weeks, not months or years as hardware-based solutions normally require.
- Higher service revenue. Providers can build rich SD-WAN offerings that combine networking and security to yield greater business impact than basic VPN or connectivity-only SD-WAN services.
- Reduced service provider costs. The Versa SD-WAN solution combines software-based VNFs and low-cost commodity hardware with pay-as-you-use pricing, resulting in much lower capital costs than traditional WAN hardware or hardware-based SD-WAN solutions.
- Differentiated SD-WAN service. Providers can create richer managed services that combine SD-WAN capabilities with a range of security functions.
Versa SD-WAN Differentiation
Versa saw today’s SD-WAN technology as providing hybrid WAN capabilities and reducing bandwidth costs only—not solving the challenges of cost, complexity, and lack of agility for the entire branch. The company, therefore, wanted to deliver an innovative, agile, and secure software-based infrastructure for the entire branch office and the WAN.
As a result, Versa champions its SD-WAN solution, Cloud IP Platform, as one that enables enterprises and their managed service providers to further remove the WAN/branch barrier to digital transformation and cloud adoption with a multi-service software platform that reduces branch sprawl, infrastructure complexity, and interdependencies.
Versa was named a “Cool Vendor” in communications service provider infrastructure by Gartner in 2016. In May 2017, IDC recognized Versa as an IDC Innovator in the SD-WAN space. Listen to Versa’s Kumar Mehta talk about SD-WAN managed services here.
