The Silver Peak Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solution aims to revolutionize the branch as it relates to the enterprise as a whole. The company philosophy is consolidation. Silver Peak’s Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN solution champions the notion of the “thin branch,” understanding that SD-WAN is an overlay technology over the physical network. Silver Peak wants customers to be able to consolidate their branch infrastructure and replace that with an SD-WAN infrastructure.
Unity EdgeConnect, therefore, is a comprehensive appliance solution that offers WAN optimization, stateful firewall functionality, and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing. Recent features in the appliance’s software include packet inspection to underpin security and cooperation with legacy networking hardware from top vendors.
Silver Peak SD-WAN Differentiators
Silver Peak’s Unity EdgeConnect physical or virtual appliances offer enterprises predictable application performance over any combination of transport services, including low-cost consumer broadband. EdgeConnect is compatible with existing WAN infrastructure, providing migration paths to SD-WAN and ultimately to a simplified WAN architecture via the thin branch. The Silver Peak SD-WAN solution includes the following features:
- First-packet iQ. To make traffic policy decisions, First-packet iQ application classification automatically identifies more than 10,000 applications and 300 million web domains based on the first packet received. “If you’re looking to make a control decision you have to start on the very first packet of the flow,” said Damon Ennis, Silver Peak’s SVP of products. “We developed a technique that can make that decision from the very first packet. No one else is doing this to our knowledge.”
- Orchestrated app-driven security policies. Unity Orchestrator’s support for First-packet iQ application classification and seamless service chaining means that customers can configure and automate highly granular software-defined security policies to protect the branch office. Silver Peak claims that a stateful firewall along with granular security orchestration provides application performance based on business intent, simplifies the branch office, and lowers Capex.
- BGP routing interoperability. Simplifying the transition of the legacy branch to SD-WAN, and enabling the concept of the thin branch, BGP is used to exchange routing and reachability information, connecting end points such as branches and data centers. Customers can migrate to SD-WAN at their own pace.
Silver Peak SD-WAN in the News
In 2016, Gartner recognized Silver Peak as a leader in Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization. Earlier, in 2015, Gartner also recognized Silver Peak SD-WAN in its Market Guide for SD-WAN. In August 2017, independent network test lab Miercom subjected the Silver Peak SD-WAN solution to packet-loss stress tests that the product successfully endured.
