Enterprises have wholeheartedly embraced the arrival of cloud platforms, both public and private. Furthermore, enterprises large and small also understand the importance of having resilient architectures that can withstand failures of a single cloud. As such, multi-cloud applications are becoming the new norm. These multi-cloud applications are often based on micro-services architectures, utilizing best-of-breed services offered by different public clouds such as machine learning, and image and voice recognization. However, running applications across multi-clouds comes with a host of challenges that SD-WAN technology can be applied to mitigate.
Hybrid-clouds and multi-cloud architectures, especially with deployments of multiple VPCs (virtual private clouds), can complicate network topologies, introduce performance issues, and increase attack surfaces. Trying to figure out how to interconnect different VPCs, working through security policies and rules and ensuring encrypted tunnels across many VPCs (and branch and HQ locations) can be a major undertaking.
SDxCentral Research (now independently branded as AvidThink) has put together this Research Brief for enterprises with multi-cloud deployments, to concretely assess how SD-WAN technologies can help by simplifying the creation of network connections, encrypting and securing those connections, and reducing and optimizing use of bandwidth over those connections. We also explore how increased visibility provided by SD-WAN platforms with network performance capabilities can improve troubleshooting times, assist with capacity planning and reduce bandwidth costs.
