Virtualization of Access Networks – Hurdles to Commercialization
Network operators are rapidly upgrading their access networks to support enhanced video streams, speed delivery of cloud applications, and improve the customer experience. Virtualization of the access network enables operators to deliver new services more rapidly, save money on equipment costs, and reduce the complexity of operations (e.g. ties to OSS/BSS).
This webinar explores the key challenges to virtualizing the access network and the benefits of new access standards, as such as virtualized OLT Hardware Abstraction (vOLTHA) and R-CORD. It will provide an overview of the vOLTHA architecture, current status of OLT disaggregation, possible hardware/software solution for Central Offices based on vOLTHA and challenges and considerations towards commercialization.
About the Presenters
Lee Doyle is Principal Analyst at Doyle Research. Previously, Lee Doyle was Group Vice President in charge of IDC’s Network Infrastructure and Security groups, including Enterprise and Datacenter Networks, Telecommunications Equipment, Security, and Infrastructure Services research. Lee holds a B.A. in Economics from Williams College.
Alan DiCicco is responsible for helping service providers create new services and deliver exceptional return on their investment by leveraging new optical networking technologies, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). Alan’s 20 years of networking and communications system experience includes senior roles in solutions marketing, product management, and business operations, during which time he defined product architectures and network strategies for business, wireless, and residential networks.
Rizwan Mir serves as senior director, product line manager for Radisys’ CORD Solutions and Services. He brings more than 20 years expertise in software and professional services, with cross domain expertise in mobile wireless, SDN/NFV, Cloud, IoT and cybersecurity. At Radisys, he leads efforts in Central Office Rearchitected as a Datacenter (CORD) Solutions and Professional Services to help communications service providers transform their networks using open source software and open compute platforms. Prior to Radisys, Mir held leadership positions at Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent. He has an MBA in Management Sciences from Benedictine University and an MSc in Wireless Data Networks from The Ohio State University.
