End users make it pretty clear what they want from SDN and NV products: interoperability, scalability, reliability, and ease of use. Of course, we know that in reality, it’s sometimes hard to find the right technology to fit these criteria.
This year, our 2016 SDN Controller and NV survey drilled deep into the attributes needed in both SDN controllers and NV solutions. We also split out some of the results for our sizable groups of technology vendors and end users to find out if there is some kind of disconnect in the market.
There were some discrepancies between what end-users and technology vendors saw as the two most important attributes in an NV solution. While both groups identified “openness/interoperability” as the biggest must have capability, the degree to which this was important, versus other attributes, was not as stark with customers as it was for vendors. Fifty-five percent of vendors saw this as a key capability, while only 34% of end-users chose it. This could speak to the different perspectives of the groups – customers want it all, while vendors are often looking at what they need to prioritize and deliver first. Vendors should probably take note that end-user customers were almost equally interested in “cloud management platform integration” (31%), “performance” (29%), “scalability” (29%), and “Richness of L2/L3 feature sets” (19%)).
