A WAN is typically connects branch offices to a central corporate network or connects data centers separated by long distances. WAN connections are often proprietary and require special hardware adding significant cost.
In the modern software-defined era, WAN connections are being replaced with less costly solutions, often integrated into the cloud. SD-WAN cost reduction can be significant amounting to 75%, 65% or even 50% of a traditional WAN. However, SD-WAN solutions offer more than just cost savings.
SD-WAN is capable of managing multiple types of connections from MPLS to broadband to LTE. Because they take advantage of existing communications solutions they provide a most flexible and resilient solution vs traditional offerings. If one connection fails, another can be utilized. Additionally, bandwidth can grow on-demand as need to accommodate burst traffic.
SD-WAN are also, in most cases, easier to manage with a centralized software solution monitoring multiple connections and connection types. Administrators no longer have to implement multiple systems depending on their particular connection or network architecture.
SD-WANs continue the trends in WAN technology that include WAN-optimization and Hybrid-WAN. Both WAN-optimization and Hybrid-WAN share characteristics with SD-WAN but are not the same. WAN optimization is a collection of techniques for increasing data transfer efficiencies across WANs and include technologies such as deduplication, compression, caching/proxy, and more. A hybrid WAN consists of different types of connection types. Both of these can be a part of an SD-WAN solution, but those alone do not result in an SD-WAN.
SD-WAN has Gartner predicted in 2015 that by the end of 2019 30% of enterprises will deploy SD-WAN technology in their branches.
The ease of deployment, central manageability and reduced costs make SD-WAN an attractive option for enterprises.
