Fully-managed SD-WAN solution
Customer problem: Enterprises are challenged to connect remote offices to centralized services over large geographic distances.
Managed SD-WAN services are similar to a number of existing managed services offerings (managed LAN/WAN, managed router, managed firewall, managed VPN, to list a few) that network service providers (NSPs) offer in the market today.
Service providers have long addressed this problem with managed wide area network (WAN) services based on technologies such as managed VPN, T1s or MPLS circuits. Customers pay a monthly subscription for fully managed networking equipment and services to connect to remote branch offices. Service level agreements (SLAs) guarantee network performance and connectivity. Although this scenario is a working for both providers and customers, customers want to reduce costs of these high cost, but high quality, services.
New SD-WAN technology that uses cheaper, commercial grade networking solutions, are impacting both the WAN technologies market but also changing how service providers address customer’s needs. With managed SD-WAN services, the service provider installs and manages the edge CPE devices, procures and manages access links from multiple NSPs, and manages all day-to-day network management aspects of the solution.
Ultimately, managed SD-WAN services are displacing managed WAN services.
The main benefits of SD-WAN solutions are cost reduction, flexibility, and resiliency. Managed SD-WAN providers can pass these benefits on to their enterprise customers. Additionally, SD-WAN solutions are typically easier to manage via a web-based management console that can manage multiple types of connection, or a hybrid WAN.
Partnerships between service providers and SD-WAN vendors is growing quickly. Traditional service providers want a piece of the fast-growing market and SD-WAN vendors seek to lower their costs and rapidly gain access to enterprise customers.
