Our SDxCentral Research team once again conducted our network function virtualization (NFV) survey to try to identify new and emerging trends and better understand how organizations are implementing virtualized architectures and service delivery models. We ran the annual survey on the SDxCentral site during the month of March 2017. There were a total of 159 respondents. We separated out the responses from technology vendor participants (~50%) to ensure the data accurately represents the perceptions and experiences of current end users.
NFV Interest and Adoption
Of service provider responses, 41% said they are “Actively looking at NFV solutions,” 35% are “Testing and piloting NFV solutions,” and 15% have already “Deployed NFV into production.” Only 6% said that they have “tested or looked at NFV solutions and decided they won’t work,” and a tiny portion, 3% simply don’t see the appeal of NFV technologies.
If the responses of the participants are any indication, we can expect deployments of NFV solutions to accelerate over the next five years. 74% of those who indicated they were interested in NFV technologies said they expect 5-20% of their infrastructure to be based on NFV by the end of this year. Over the next five years, 30% of the participants predicted that 40-60% of their infrastructure will be based on NFV, and 24% thought that percentage would be as much as 60-80%.
