Our research indicates clear direction from end users in the enterprise and service provider markets: They would like more open, interoperable platforms for delivering SD-WAN and vCPE functionality from the cloud. They are also clearly interested in virtualization strategies to delivery more flexible and agile WAN services.
It’s still quite early in the market, as only a handful of service providers have launched SD-WAN services using a cloud model, but we believe this market is gaining momentum and many more services will be launched in the next 2-5 years. There is a clear commitment from major service providers to move to the NFV and SDN model for delivery services and many of them have trials under way to test new equipment and software.
It’s now up to the technology providers to ensure that carrier-class products come to market. This will entail further development and interoperability testing, to ensure the emerging SD-WAN and vCPE products can operate and scale to meet service provider expectations.
The following sections of this report profile some of the vendors offering tools to building the virtualized customer edge, including vCPE and SD-WAN solutions.
