For service providers, Versa FlexVNF enables next-generation managed services — with full multi-tenancy — for software-defined WAN (SD-WAN), software-defined security (SD-Security) and virtual CPE (vCPE). For enterprises, it provides highly scalable SD-WAN with integrated security. FlexVNF is purely software-based and works on low-cost CPE, reducing both deployment costs and time-to-service.
Virtual Edge Solution Details
|Solution Demand||Telecom, Financials, Retail|
Versa Networks provides truly software-based and multi-tenant SD-WAN and SD-Security with big data analytics. Running on commodity hardware, Versa SD-WAN and SD-Security maximize service provider and enterprise agility while eliminating proprietary network appliances. In contrast to traditional network hardware devices, Versa can reduce deployment from weeks to hours and reduce TCO up to 80%.

|Product Differentiator||Purely software- and NFV-based solution that works on low-cost white boxes and x86 servers|
|Product Differentiator #2||Full set of integrated security functions (NG firewall, secure web gateway, AV, IPS, malware protection, etc)|
|Product Differentiator #3||Multi-tenancy across controller, CPE, and management = faster provisioning, lower cost deployments|
For managed services, Versa enables providers to create multiple offerings with network + security functions in customer premises (branch), head-end (PoP/CO/data center), or both. VNFs located on customer premises enable vCPE , managed SD-WAN (“medium branch”) or managed SD-Security +/- SD-WAN. This is accomplished with Versa VNFs + COTS-based CPE (cost / performance tbd on “thickness” of branch services and corresponding hardware requirements). For enterprise-managed deployments, Versa VNFs in the branch office, and SD-WAN controller in the data center or cloud, enable enterprise SD-WAN with option to add branch-based security VNFs (firewalls, IPS, AV, etc).
Per description above, Versa VNFs can be deployed in either the customer premises, head-end (PoP/CO/data center) or both. For vCPE deployments, the majority of network and security functions are performed via VNFs in the head-end (PoP/CO), while branch-based VNFs are fairly simple (e.g. L2 forwarding or basic routing). Versa Director (management) and Analytics (big data analytics) can operate in the telco PoP, CO or data center. Versa’s multi-tenancy + seamless elasticity enables massive scalability in the PoP/CO, with ability to grow to 100s of tenants on a single Versa FlexVNF instance (and associated COTS hardware).
|Regional/Enterprise Data Center||
Similar to the description of PoP/CO deployments for service providers, Versa FlexVNF as well as Director would be deployed in the enterprise data center, with Analytics as optional. Specific VNFs on FlexVNF that would be deployed in the enterprise data center (vs. the branch office) would include an SD-WAN controller as well as security functions desired to be located centrally (e.g. next-gen firewalls or malware protection).
|L3 Routing Capabilities||Yes|
|Description of L3 Routing Capabilities||
Static and Dynamic Routing, OSPFv2, BGPv4 including L3VPN, BFD, ECMP, Policy-based Routing, Graceful Restart, redistribution policies, multiple VRFs are supported. Complete control & data plane, routing and VRF separation exists per tenant.
|Description of L2/Network Services||
All services are per tenant. CG-NAT: Static/Dynamic, Twice NAT, NAPT, Port forwarding, IP Address Management, DHCP Client/Server/Relay, DNS, IKE/IPsec –PSK/PKI, next generation VPNs, site-to-site VPNs, Policy-based Forwarding, High Availability: Intra and inter virtual appliance redundancy, 1:1 for control plane, 1:1, N:1 for service plane, CFM, VRRP.
|Application-Aware QoS Capabilities||Yes|
|Application-Aware QoS Capabilities||
L7 applications/application groups/URL categories can be matched and a QoS profile can be applied to rate limit the matched application traffic. DSCP marking into forwarding classes, loss priority are also supported. Traffic shaping and queuing are also available.
For SD-WAN applications, FlexVNFs support application-aware forwarding based on application SLA requirements.
|Description of Multi-Network Capability||
Multiple networks like broadband, MPLS, 4G LTE can be distinguished. Traffic prioritization on the links can be based on low cost, available bandwidth or round robin and based on the application SLAs being met against the network links at any point. Policies can be applied to load balance the traffic.
|Built-in L4 Security Capabilities||Yes|
|Description of Built-in L4 Security Capabilities||
Versa solution provides a wide range of L4 security functions including stateful firewall, Geo IP detection, ALGs, DDoS. Versa solutions have powerful service chaining that automatically inserts each security function into the appropriate location to minimize deployment time and staff cycles. They also have built-in elasticity to scale out/in.
|Built-in L7 App-Aware Security Capabilities||Yes|
