EZchip NPS Family of Network Processors
Scheduled to sample in 2014, EZchip’s newest product family, the NPS – Network Processors for Smart networks – will bring maximum flexibility through C‑based programming, Linux OS and full 7-layer processing, as well as integrated traffic management, security and DPI hardware acceleration. These unique properties enable a wide range of network services at extremely high performance that can be invoked through simple software updates and make the NPS an excellent fit to facilitate the next transition in the networking market.
In coming years, new architectures based on technologies brought about by network virtualization, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) will reshape networks. NPS highlights the importance of a new class of NPUs that provide a clear separation between control plane and data plane in next generation networking equipment. While some low performance network applications may use general-purpose CPUs to run both the control plane and the data plane, this approach it is not viable for high performance applications in large carrier and data center networks. NPS will enable networks to run data-plane functions at high performance, flexibly placed in the network where needed, in a variety of hardware platforms, to enable efficient, flexible and scalable networks.
Initially EZchip will sample the NPS-400 and NPS-200 featuring 400 and 200 Gigabit-per-second throughput, respectively.

Carrier Ethernet switch/routers:
NPS provides a compelling roadmap follow-on to the NP product line with greater flexibility and performance, laying the foundation for next generation routers with in-line services enabled on the line card.
Data center appliances:
NPS delivers data-plane processing and high-speed connectivity, high-port density, virtualized network functions, IP segmentation and reassembly, TCP termination, DPI, IPSec and SSL for a variety of data center appliances that provide security, network monitoring and load balancing.
NPS provides data-plane processing on either a smart server adapter card installed within the server, or a stand-alone system which is separate from the server and provides data-plane processing for multiple servers. This forms a powerful, programmable and high-performance solution for carrier and data center networks migrating to SDN and NFV architectures, future-proof to new protocols, APIs and applications.
Data center switches:
NPS provides an intelligent and programmable forwarding engine for TOR (Top of Rack) and line cards for aggregation switches. New and evolving SDN protocols, network overlay and encapsulation schemes, multi-tenancy and virtualization, large flow and ACL tables with millions of entries, millions of statistics counters for network and rate monitoring are all supported. Large packet buffering, lossless forwarding with congestion management and avoidance complete for a resilient and flexible switching solution.
