The Lumina SDN Controller, Powered by OpenDaylight, is the industry’s leading open source controller for service providers and enterprises. Lumina’s controller is vendor and protocol agnostic and can be used to support a wide variety of use cases.
|Open Source Project||Yes|
|Based on Open Source Projects||OpenDaylight|
|Top Use Cases||WAN configuration and optimization, Network and Device Configuration, Data Center Network Optimization|
|Primary Programming Language||Java and Python|
|External Northbound APIs||Yes|
|Northbound API Details||
The Lumina SDN Controller includes a “northbound” API aimed at supporting applications using RESTCONF. This architecture enables vendor-agnostic SDN by abstracting and normalizing the interface to a variety of network devices.
|Southbound Protocols||BGP, Netconf, OpenFlow, OVSDB and PCEP and BGP-LS|
Lumina Networks’ approach to SDN is rooted in open source code, vendor independence & quick-turn agile development methodology. We contribute code back to the open source community working alongside our customers. Our unique NetDev Services helps our customers integrate SDN technology & build service abstractions that move the provider quickly toward a next generation network architecture & service deployment ability. Lumina’s approach is in sharp contrast to typical vendor approaches that lock users into a specific hardware or software platform & making them dependent on the vendor’s roadmap. Rather than just “open APIs” as many vendors claim, Lumina supports open source code & normalized APIs developed by the open source community.
Depending upon the target controller or networking platform, Lumina uses the controller’s native protocols for configuration such as NETCONF, or can create specific adapters to vendor’s APIs or CLI. Lumina provide tools and services than make these integrations and adapter development easier. In such cases, Lumina has been able to help service providers bring legacy networking platforms unchanged into current SDN architectures and use cases.
|Performance and Scale||
Details of the controller’s performance and scalability can be found here in this comprehensive report:
Major service providers including AT&T, TENCENT and others have deployed OpenDaylight in large scale use cases and services.
The Lumina SDN controller is priced as an annual recurring and subscription and licenses are measured by nodes, seats, virtual machines or ports supported, depending upon the product. NetDev Services are priced via contract or statement of work.
