Voice and video media are a key component of any CSP real time communications service offering – so the processing of media packet streams is critical to address in network virtualization. Media is largely processed today using custom proprietary appliances such as IP media gateways or Session Border Controllers (SBCs), using hardware digital signal processing for transcoding of media packets. Given the sensitivity of media to latency, delay and jitter, these media appliances have been fine-tuned over the years to attain optimal performance and provide media processing scalability with vertical scaling.GENBAND’s approach for enabling media processing in the telco cloud leverages standard NFV Infrastructure (NFVI) in the most efficient manner as a common resource pool using media virtual network functions that scale transcoding elastically and horizontally under Management and Network Orchestration (MANO) control via a VNF Manager while maintaining the high performance needed for media packet processing.
Common Processing for Multiple Media Applications
The most effective way to provide media processing support for multiple communications applications is to utilize a common media processing approach in the NFV cloud that different applications can all utilize and control. This implies the applications have separated control and media processing to allow for independent scaling and distribution. These applications range from SBCs for IP interconnects and access, session routing and control, as wells as Media Resource Function Processors (MRFP) for VoLTE and other IMS applications, voicemail and WebRTC, to name a few. GENBAND’s SBC utilizes the AMS VNF as a common media resource, and manages the media resources using H.248, a common standard control protocol and the concept of virtual media gateways. These standard and open approaches are proven in physical networks and easily translate to the telco cloud. The AMS software can be deployed on a dedicated COTS appliance (Q50) or as a VNF in a full NFV environment.
High Performance using Open Source Software Technologies
To successfully execute media processing in the cloud, a focused effort is needed on achieving high performance in software versus using purpose-built digital signal processors. Open approaches such as Open vSwitch and the Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) are critical in achieving these high performance levels. By combining these software-based acceleration techniques with Intel-based servers, greater performance has been realized.
Hybrid Deployments with NFV
The separated architecture of control (ACS) and media processing (AMS) not only allows for independent scaling of control plane and data plane processing, but also allows for distributed and hybrid deployment approaches. Hybrid approaches provide CSPs with flexible deployment options and the ability to introduce network virtualization of signaling VNF (ACS) along with their in-network deployments (AMS on Q50 appliance) while providing flexible migration options from one to the other.
Enabling Media Distribution in Core and Edge Data Centers
The separated architecture for control and media processing also allows for easy distribution of media VNFs to Edge Data Centers leaving the control VNFs of the applications to run in the core Data Center, or a combination. The interworking between the core Data Center and the Edge Data Center would be via Software Defined Networking (SDN). This is especially important given the sensitivity of media to latency and delay.
