Ericsson Cloud VPN solution delivers managed VPN and IP value added services for residential, SMB’s and 2nd tier Enterprise offices. It is a fully virtualized, automated and open solution which can be consumed as turnkey service or customized and adapted to specific CPE and service functions. Cloud VPN leverage operator residential network assets to avoid expensive re-engineering and to leverage mass market CPE cost point.
Ericsson Cloud VPN Key Capabilities include Service orchestration and management, Integration with operator mobile access & IP/MPLS VPN, and Agile and open SDN driven service delivery in the Cloud.
Virtual Edge Solution Details
|Solution Demand||Telecom operators providing residential triple play and enterprise managed services.|
Ericsson’s Cloud VPN solution enables high granular personalization to boost customer experience, and an open framework for third party services ecosystem, self-provisioned from the Self-care portal. It integrates easily with existing networks to address SMBs and residential markets with the same flexible and future-proof architecture and to effectively lower CAPEX.

|Product Differentiator||Openness and Modularity. Open framework based on open Standards so that virtually any Service Function and lightweight CPE can be used.|
|Product Differentiator #2||Personalization and flexibility. Subscriber awareness and granular service chaining together with Shared multi-tenant service functions increases customer satisfaction and lowers capex and opex.|
|Product Differentiator #3||Professional Services. You are not alone. Ericsson is present worldwide with offices in more than 100 countries: www.ericsson.com/about-us/company-facts/ericsson-worldwide/|
Ericsson Cloud VPN solution open framework enables support for all CPEs, and adheres to the recently approved TR-317 from BBWF, allowing the use of very lightweight CPEs while moving the Service Functions into the cloud. We have collaboration agreements with some of the main CPE vendors supporting TR-317 requirements. OpenWRT based CPEs are also another option.
Ericsson Cloud VPN solution in the Central Office relies on the elasticity of cloud executionenvironment, with ETSI MANO based multi-site management, the networking flexibility and programmability provided by an SDN connectivity layer, and the cross-domain automation exposing network slice capabilities that include service functions and personalized connectivity in real time to each tenant through APIs connected to a self-care portal.
|Regional/Enterprise Data Center||
In the regional Data Center, only the cloud execution environment, together with the virtualized service functions and the SDN based connectivity layer are required.
|Transport Network Elements – including optical, copper (physical) and MPLS (logical)||
Ericsson Cloud VPN is compatible with existing L3VPN access in the operator network as well as with Overlay access methods based on GRE and VxLAN tunneling as specified by BBWF TR-317. The automation of the operator’s traditional access and transport network, e.g. the automation of L3PVN provisioning is not part of the solution but it is optionally available from Ericsson too.
|L3 Routing Capabilities||Yes|
|Description of L3 Routing Capabilities||
Ericsson Cloud VPN solution open framework enables a large degree of freedom for the operator to select the CPEs of their choice. For L3VPN access, existing CPE can be used. For L2 Overlay access, fulfilling the BBWF TR-317 requirements is sufficient. In general, complex L3 routing capabilities are not mandatory.
|Description of L2/Network Services||
It includes a multi-tenant Device Manager in the DC, providing DHCP and a database for device information and status in the tenant slice. EDM steers the device differentiation in the network and exposes information to self-care portal for the end user to change e.g. chain of services associated to end-devices.
|Application-Aware QoS Capabilities||Yes|
|Application-Aware QoS Capabilities||
The solution provides per-application and per-VM QoS. Differentiation per end-device, enterprise branch, type of traffic, etc. and a very granular traffic steering to different service functions is also provided. Therefore, complex use cases like having a firewall just for some traffic types of a limited set of users are possible.
|Description of Multi-Network Capability||
If the CPE selected supports LTE and fixed-access, Ericsson Cloud SDN supports multi-network capability and bonding if required. It provides also network slices, automated both in terms of traffic steering and service function assignment, including the orchestration of different domains and allowing usage and control to the corresponding tenant.
|Built-in L4 Security Capabilities||Yes|
|Description of Built-in L4 Security Capabilities||
Ericsson Cloud VPN is an open framework to onboard virtually any Service Function that makes sense to the operator to provide the best service to the end-users. The solution already has verified and pre-integrated e.g. firewalls, anti-virus or Content Filtering applications representing the best-of-breed in each category.
|Built-in L7 App-Aware Security Capabilities||Yes|
|Top Use Cases||Virtual networks for enterprise campuses, CPE solutions for residential and commercial subscribers (vCPE), Mobile core applications and Improving flexibility and agility for internal operational efficiencies|
