Cumulus Rack Management Platform (RMP)
Cumulus RMP Overview
Cumulus® RMP™ (Rack Management Platform) is a network operating system solution which enables the Out-Of-Band management use cases. It provides an open platform for customers and system integrators to use as is or build rack management applications on top.
Cumulus RMP shares the same architecture, foundation and user experience with Cumulus® Linux®. The features sets are also customized to the needs of out-of-band management. Please see the features tab for details on what’s supported on Cumulus RMP.
Cumulus RMP Use Case
Out-of-Band management is fundamental underpinning of a modern data centers. To manage the servers effectively, a separate network is often put in place to separate the management traffic from production traffic of the servers. Image updates, maintenance, lights-out management and monitoring tasks can then be performed via this network without impacting or being impacted by the production traffic of the servers.
Historically Out-of-Band (OOB) management networks have been built from less functional and closed platforms, which often has resulted in information and tools gaps that can affect the operational ability to manage the environment in the most efficient way. For instance, port to server mappings in the Out-of-Band network is often done by hand and if it is not updated can result in a hunt to find the actual port or server that is needing to be managed. Similarly tools difficulties can extended the time it takes to perform the operation required, say where the OOB setup on the server is not fully up to date and can not be reached remotely. These, and other issues, are effectively solved with Cumulus RMP as the open Linux platform allows you to locally collect rich connectivity data (LLDP, MAC, etc.), develop or extend applications to perform actions on this data, along with running management tools locally say with IPMItool.
