Open Source

Software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and network virtualization (NV) have a vast open source community, committed to growing projects that promote open standards.

Groups like the OpenDaylight Project and the Open Networking Foundation have been instrumental in creating open source projects and products, such as OpenFlow and open source SDN Controllers. Open source relies heavily on collaboration in the industry so as to offer solutions and products to the public at no cost. Several companies and groups contribute to open source projects, including the newly announced Open Platform for NFV Project (OPNFV).

Open source projects and communities offer an open framework that helps mitigate inconsistent interoperability and limited management tools. It provides flexibility and choice, offering a way to accelerate adoption of SDN and build a strong foundation for NFV.

SDxCentral regularly updates the SDN and NFV community on open source advancements and strives to provide the latest news, whitepapers, videos, and other resources to promote open source projects. To learn more about the benefits of open source and how it’s impacting SDN and NFV, read more below.
