WiFi vendor Xirrus announced today that it has added new monitoring capabilities and application program interfaces (APIs) to its CommandCenter product for cloud-managed WiFi.

“If you look at where the market is headed, we’ve gone from networks being looked at as isolated and individually managed to cloud hosting, sharing resources, and scaling in different types of ways,” says Bruce Miller, VP of product marketing at Xirrus.

Xirrus has had cloud-managed WiFi for four years and last year announced CommandCenter, part of the Xirrus Management System (XMS). Although the command center has always had monitoring capabilities, there is now a dashboard that puts all of the information gathered from Xirrus access points (APs) in one place.

Specifically, managed service providers (MSPs) can now combine the monitoring of up to 1,000 customer networks. The new CommandCenter dashboard displays red or green tiles, each representing a customer and the state of its network. Providers click on a tile to drill into their networks — down to a specific AP — to diagnose a problem, Miller says.

This monitoring capability works with tools from other third-party monitoring companies including Drager, AirWatch, and ForeScout.

Additionally, the CommandCenter has new APIs for integrating Xirrus into MSPs’ proprietary software using a turnkey system. Before this announcement, providers had to manually install Xirrus into each individual access point if they wanted to integrate it with third-party software.

This lets providers to bring customers on board more quickly by sending them APs and connecting them to Xirrus’ cloud. “Usually, customers would go straight to the wireless provider to get WiFi, and this solution allows customers to go straight to MSPs to integrate Xirrus’ WiFi into their networks,” Miller says.

Xirrus claims to have hundreds of MSP customers internationally, including Eir Ireland.
