Google Cloud's lack of profitability and millions of dollars in operating losses remain concerning to Alphabet investors, even with recent reports of year-over-year growth for its cloud services segment.
The company grew its cloud business 32% to $7.3 billion in revenue during the fourth quarter of 2022, but sustained an operating loss similar to last year's at $480 million. Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat noted growth in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) was greater than in the overall cloud segment, which reflects the company's "strength in both infrastructure and platform services."
Since the growth aspect is there, investors sought guidance on what additional factors are holding the hyperscaler back from delivering on its cloud investments. Porat doubled down on Alphabet's cloud efforts and noted "we've been investing ahead of our revenues, given the growth in the opportunity overall and the desire to ensure that we're equipped [and] able to support customers across segments around the globe," she said during Alphabet's latest earning call.
Porat also noted the current macroeconomic backdrop has led to existing cloud customers optimizing their GCP spend to save costs. To that point, Google Cloud is "extremely focused on the path to profitability," she noted, citing the company's technical infrastructure efficiency efforts.
"Given the scale of the opportunity and the speed with which it's moving, we're positioned to be present with our customers [and] to provide them with the analytics, the skills, the capabilities that are needed to build for long-term growth. And we're at a position now where we've meaningfully closed the gap to profitability, but still are working through as we continue to invest for growth while narrowing what this is," Porat explained.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai added that the company is "committed to investing responsibly with great discipline and defining areas where we can operate more cost-effectively. We are focused on methodically building financially sustainable, vibrant, growing businesses across Alphabet."
The majority of Alphabet's $282 billion in 2022 revenue came from Google Services and its ad business, which represents total revenue growth of 10% from the previous year.
