Brazilian digital infrastructure operator V.tal has unveiled plans to launch a subsea cable connecting the country to the U.S.

Dubbed Synapse, the 6027-mile (9,700 km) system will run from São Paulo to Tuckerton, New Jersey.

Set to feature some 16 fiber pairs, the subsea cable is expected to support connectivity of up to 800 Gb/s, with the operator positioning it to support international AI, cloud, and hyperscale traffic.

“This submarine cable represents a strategic investment in strengthening digital connectivity between Brazil and the U.S.,” V.tal CEO Felipe Campos said in a LinkedIn post. “By integrating subsea, terrestrial, and data center infrastructure, we are building a robust, scalable platform ready to support the growth of the global digital economy.”

Construction on Synapse will kick off in the second half of 2026, with completion estimated between 2029 and 2030.

It’ll also feature a branching unit stretching out to Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil, adding an additional 285 miles. V.tal operates some two data centers in the city, along with a facility in Rio, though plans are in the works to open facilities in Synapse’s starting city of São Paulo, as well as in Porto Alegre in the south of the country.

V.tal said the Fortaleza connection “strengthens the city's strategic position as an international connectivity hub in the Americas and meets the growing demand for high-capacity, low-latency digital infrastructure.”

Among other potential cities the subsea system could branch off to include Recife, Salvador, and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, as well as to Colombia.

V.tal has been planning new subsea cable routes in Latin America for several years. The vendor’s portfolio already includes the GlobeNet system, which extends to Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza, and to cities in Venezuela, Colombia, Bermuda, and the U.S.

It also operates the Malbec cable system, linking Rio and São Paulo to Buenos Aires alongside Meta. The pair announced plans to extend the system to Porto Alegre, with the expansion set to come online in 2027.
