Long-tenured Verizon network executive Adam Koeppe is set to leave the carrier at year-end, continuing what has been a year-long overhaul of the carrier’s executive suite under CEO Dan Schulman.
Koeppe in a LinkedIn post explained that “it’s time to move on to the next chapter,” stepping away from his current role as SVP and chief network officer at the end of the year. Despite the move, Koeppe did leave a positive note for the carrier.
“My confidence in Verizon’s future remains high,” Koeppe wrote. “The mission to build, secure, and scale the foundational networks of tomorrow matters now more than ever. I will be enthusiastically rooting for the V–Team (especially all our Leadership Development Program team members) as you continue to expand the boundaries of what is possible with creativity and empathy.”
Koeppe has spent more than a quarter-century at the carrier across various network management roles. This began as a member of its technical staff at the turn of the century, working up to taking on the current chief network officer role late last year.
It’s also worth noting that Koeppe served nearly two years in the mid-90s as a customer service representative at Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile, which years later would become one of the regional telecom legs that formed Verizon.
Verizon operational overhaul continues
Koeppe’s move comes on the heels of published reports that Verizon was set to slash up to 500 jobs across its corporate operations, cuts that were labeled as "part of our ongoing transformation" and the latest under Schulman who in just a year has implemented significant cost-cutting programs across the carrier. This included an initial move to slash 13,000 jobs, which was completed at the end of Verizon’s fiscal first quarter of this year and came with a $2 billion price tag, and a more recent round of cuts.
Specific to the carrier’s corporate ranks, Koeppe’s exit echoes that of former Verizon Consumer CEO Sowmyanarayan Sampath, who left the carrier earlier this year and just recently popped up as CEO of Zayo Group.
Koeppe was also part of that corporate overhaul when late last year he was tapped as head of the carrier’s combined Core Engineering and Operations group, having previously headed up what was the carrier’s Technology Planning, Capital, and Maintenance Engineering team. The move came under the cloud of broad corporate job cuts, which Koeppe acknowledged in a LinkedIn post at that time.
“It’s been a tough couple weeks here as many of our friends and colleagues are leaving Verizon,” Koeppe wrote. “There is immense gratitude for their years of service to our customers. Health and happiness to all as you begin your next chapter.”
