Telefónica is trialing some technology from Juniper Networks within its own Spanish network. Telefónica’s goal, as part of its Fusión Network initiative, is to be able to detect and correct network faults before they impact customers. The service provider wants to evolve its infrastructure into one that can self-analyze, self-discover, self-configure and, ultimately, self-correct.
One of the elements of Fusión Network is getting greater visibility into the network through telemetry.
Telefónica will test some tools from Juniper including the Juniper Extension Toolkit (JET) covering all phases of network design, construction, provision, and operation. JET is implemented with the extensive use of APIs to deliver more programmatic interaction.
Donyel Jones-Williams, director of product marketing management at Juniper, said, “Toolkit is our published APIs to go into the management plane and control plane to manipulate how you want the network to behave. When I want to issue commands in the network, I want to do it in a precise way.”
Telefónica is also testing Juniper’s Junos Telemetry Interface to collect the data needed to detect the state of network resources and services.
“What we are doing with Telemetry Interface is putting in probes that reside in the silicon itself,” said Jones-Williams. “We have the ability to stream information out of the router at different levels back to a central place to do analytics. Within the chipsets we have, you can request the silicon to send certain types of information to a collector. The great thing is it’s all done in hardware, and there’s no better place in the network to understand traffic than in the silicon itself.”
“Telefónica inherently understands the need for a network that analyzes network conditions, diagnoses faults and security breaches, and proactively takes remedial action, all without human intervention,” said Joaquín Mata, CTO at Telefónica España, in a statement.
