Juniper Networks announced today that service provider Telefónica has chosen Juniper’s SRX Series Service Gateways as the platform to deliver global network security.

SRX uses a cloud-based network architecture and has embedded security functions. Juniper claims that it also enables a software-defined secure network where issues can be detected and policy can be enforced anywhere in the network.

Some newer features of SRX include 100 Gb/s Ethernet interfaces as well as Juniper’s Express Path technology, which it claims can perform up to 2 Tb/s. Additionally, Telefónica will be provided with Juniper’s Professional Services, which includes training, onsite support, legacy migration, installation, and maintenance of SRX.

Juniper has been attempting to revive its security business, which accounts for 9 percent of Juniper’s revenues, according a report from analyst Mitch Steves of RBC Capital Markets.

Juniper’s security revenues declined in 2015, after it sold off Junos Pulse, and continues to see a decline in older, ScreenOS-based security products, according to Steves. However, this number was offset by an increase in SRX platform and security software sales within the service provider market, he writes.

Telefónica has been a past customer of Juniper’s, using the vendor's MX routers.
