Telefónica Peru wanted to build its own data center to support the rapid deployment of cloud services. It hired Huawei to transform one of its central offices into a cloud data center.

After analyzing its business needs and considering local conditions, Telefónica decided to transform its existing central office in the Lince district of Lima, Peru, into a data center. It chose Huawei to manage and coordinate multiple equipment suppliers and construction subcontractors to make the transition.

The method reused existing assets and shortened the construction period that would have been required if it had built a greenfield data center.

The Lince data center covers 6,000 square meters, and has earned Uptime Tier III design certification. Telefónica said multiple enterprises from financial, municipal, and mass transit have expressed interest in joining the data center.

The service provider said the completion of the Lince data center laid an important foundation for its cloud service development and ICT transformation in Peru.

In the United States, several service providers are working within the open source Central Office Re-architected as a Data Center (CORD) project to transform their existing infrastructure into something that more resembles a data center.

In addition, U.S. carriers such as Verizon are building adjuncts to their existing infrastructure and connecting these more modern facilities together into “telco clouds.”

According to Huawei, in helping Telefónica Peru lay the foundations of its cloud strategy, it has also accumulated valuable experience. During the Lince project, Huawei managed more than 20 subcontractors and more than 120 construction workers. Huawei said it has helped global carriers build 830 data centers.
