Software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) vendor Silver Peak partnered with China Telecom Shanghai to provide its largest enterprise customers with managed SD-WAN services based on Silver Peak’s EdgeConnect.

Silver Peak repackaged EdgeConnect to run on China Telecom’s NetCare service, which is a monitoring platform built for the company’s largest accounts. NetCare is able to analyze analytics on network and application performance, which Silver Peak's SD-WAN system is optimizing.

Silver Peak has been working with China Telecom for the past year to integrate its SD-WAN technology with NetCare. Using broadband and MPLS, Silver Peak’s technology will allow the service provider to deliver WAN optimization services and extend the reach of its network to global customers.

While Silver Peak targets enterprises with its SD-WAN, the vendor is making a bigger push to focus on its service provider strategy, said Shayne Stubbs, VP of service providers and cloud at Silver Peak.

“It’s very clear when you look at enterprises, managed services, and especially SD-WAN the market has changed from them wanting to do SD-WAN themselves,” Stubbs said. “They have realized that it’s about cloud connectivity, and this is a big component as to why service providers are looking to have their services managed.”

Silver Peak currently has multiple service providers reselling its SD-WAN technology and others that have built managed services on top of it including providers like Masergy, NTT Communications, Interoute, and Hyundai HCN.

There has been a recent trend among SD-WAN vendors that are targeting service providers with their technology instead of selling directly to enterprises.

China Telecom Shanghai is also partnering with Westcon-Comstor to help distribute the product globally. The technology distributor also helped integrate Silver Peak’s technology into NetCare’s monitoring platform.

This isn’t China Telecom’s first entry into SD-WAN services. China Telecom Global picked Nuage Networks’ virtualized network services (VNS) SD-WAN solution to connect its smaller enterprise customers. However, China Telecom Shanghai’s deal with Silver Peak addresses enterprise customers with a large global footprint
