Ribbon Communications has launched an artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) platform.

Called Acumen, the offering is designed to help service providers and enterprises transition to autonomous networks. The platform allows operation management of the Open Systems Interconnection Model (OSI) for both voice and data, encompassing its seven layers: physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application.

Ribbon claimed Acumen offers out-of-the-box applications built on the vendor's network orchestration and analytics tools, specifically designed for troubleshooting, KPI dashboards, and data enrichment.

The Acumen Builder tool, meanwhile, facilitates the creation of specialized apps for telecom and critical infrastructure, with a low-code/no-code workflow builder for integrating AI agents into business processes. The feature also includes an AI services layer for integrating models, data stores, and related services.

AIOps and networks

Recent Forrester research found that 75% of tech decision-makers expect rising technical debt due to AI complexities. This is prompting a surge in AIOps adoption, with Forrester claiming tech leaders have tripled their adoption of AIOps platforms in the last year.

The Acumen tool joins other AIOps releases designed to help network operators boost agility and potentially lower costs by providing observability, insights, and automated processes throughout a network's lifecycle.

Similar solutions include Juniper’s AI-Native Networking Platform, which was recently updated with more AI capabilities.

Cisco, meanwhile, provides Cisco Provider Connectivity Assurance, as built on its 2023 acquisition of Accedian and its Skylight platform.

Other competitors include Arista with its Awake solution, while HPE Aruba Networking offers similar capabilities.

Nvidia may be another to watch in the space, having acquired AIOps firm Augtera Networks in February.

Ribbon's tool comes after the Plano, Texas-headquartered vendor was selected to provide a middle-mile network solution for Vibrant Broadband, with Vibrant also adopting Ribbon’s Muse Multilayer Automation Platform, which layers SDN orchestration, service-lifecycle management, and low-code automation tools.
