Red Hat OpenShift enhances power monitoring capabilities within SoftBank's AI-RAN solution, aimed at improving energy efficiency for service providers.
This collaboration was announced during Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where Red Hat and SoftBank outlined how AI-RAN will optimize power consumption and networking performance utilizing Red Hat OpenShift, a hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes. It addresses challenges in RAN implementation, including the need to balance user demands and energy costs while managing distributed workloads.
By integrating AI with RAN on Red Hat OpenShift, service providers can dynamically adjust network parameters, thereby streamlining operations. SoftBank is also developing AITRAS, which combines AI and RAN to improve orchestration and support various applications seamlessly.
Additionally, the use of community-driven technologies like Kepler, an open-source project by Red Hat, will aid in reducing energy costs through precise power-use metrics captured from applications. This integration equips AITRAS with the ability to optimize energy distribution across systems and enhances overall operational efficiency.
The power monitoring capabilities sourced from Kepler facilitate analytics on power consumption metrics, helping service providers allocate GPU-intensive workloads efficiently without compromising performance. Overall, they aim to enhance energy efficiency across differing environments.
Chris Wright, CTO of Red Hat, emphasized the commitment to future network operations by harnessing AI and supporting sustainable energy practices in telecommunications.
Looking ahead, SoftBank is focused on leveraging AI-driven infrastructure to optimize power consumption and reduce risks associated with network deployment, as noted by Ryuji Wakikawa, SoftBank's VP of Advanced Technology. The initiative marks a step towards integrating telecommunications with energy management.
