In our top story this week, writer Taryn Plumb examines the tension between Wi-Fi and 5G. Are they competitors? Frenemies? Sibling rivals? Or maybe collaborative co-workers?

It may not be a coincidence that our second most popular story this week is a dive into the certifications available for people who want to change careers. Especially since our third and fourth stories are about potential career-ending security mistakes like helping cybercriminals breach your company's firewall (to the tune of a $4.45 million average cost per breach — ouch!) or sharing private company data with a public generative artificial intelligence tool like ChatGPT.

Good luck with your job search. You might want to check out our career hub, we're just sayin'. But before you do, here's this week's top 5 stories.

1. Will 5G replace Wi-Fi? (Or will they coexist and complement each other?)

While some pit the two technologies against each other, many experts say that this “clash of titans” idea is fueled by hype and a fundamental misunderstanding of how the technologies work (and their strengths, weaknesses, pros and cons).

2. Top 10 certifications for building a SASE career

The worldwide SASE market is expected to grow from $1.9 billion in 2023 to $5.9 billion in 2028, a compound annual growth rate of 25%, with digital transformation, cloud adoption and edge computing as the biggest drivers for SASE adoption.

Despite its relative newness, SASE certification courses are already on the market. Further, popular cybersecurity certifications are beginning to incorporate SASE elements.

3. IBM reports cost of a data breach hits all-time high, but security spending lags

The 2023 IBM Cost of a Data Breach report was released this week, revealing that the average cost of a data breach has now reached an all-time high of $4.45 million. While costs of dealing with a breach are rising, the report found that only 51% of breached organizations are planning on increasing their security budgets to help reduce risk.

4. Source code is the most common sensitive data shared to ChatGPT

Source code accounted for the largest share of sensitive data being exposed to ChatGPT, according to the latest Netskope Threat Labs report. To address the risks, the vendor recommends that organizations set up controls and policies to safeguard their data and secure the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

The research found the use of genAI in enterprises is surging, with organizations of 10,000 users or more accessing at least five genAI apps daily.

5. Open RAN growth slows to a crawl

Open radio access network (RAN) market growth continues to slow alongside the broader RAN market as operators take a breath from their initial 5G investments, but analysts note ongoing integration challenges need to be managed before the open RAN market can accelerate.
