DevOps and automation vendor Puppet snapped up privately held software and container management provider Distelli for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition is set to add Distelli’s continuous delivery platform, which is focused on container and application deployments, into Puppet’s operations. Combined, Puppet is looking to expand enterprise automation practices across the software delivery lifecycle.

Distelli’s products include a dashboard for creating and managing Kubernetes containers; a platform for managing virtual machines; and a container registry for hosting Docker images. The platforms work with any server, including bare metal, public cloud, private cloud, virtual machines, and containers.

“As we looked forward at the next stage of growth, it became apparent that leveraging the brand and reach of a global partner in the DevOps space would help us deliver more power in the hands of our customers faster,” explained Distelli CEO and Founder Rahul Singh, in a blog post. "Our products are remarkably complementary and give all our customers access to a suite of services that help them accelerate innovation across the entire stack.”

Puppet will continue to offer and support Distelli products.

For Puppet, the deal boosts its operations in the growing container space. The company’s Enterprise and Docker Platform Modules are designed to help enterprises deploy and manage containers as part of a broader DevOps model.

Puppet was cited by 451 Research as “among the most established automation tools providers in the enterprise segment.” Puppet competes against a number of DevOps tools providers, including  Blue Medora, CA Technologies, Chef, Cloudbees, Dynatrace, Jfrog, SaltStack, and the Ansible arm of Red Hat.

Enterprise Strategy Group Analyst Edwin Yuen said the deal provides Puppet with greater depth in the container space for its service platform.

"This is part of the growing importance in managing the development and delivery of applications, not just the infrastructure to support it," Yuen said. "The Distelli acquisition enables Puppet to work with both the IT teams that supports AppDev and the growing DevOps side also."

Puppet in May launched a pair of platforms to expand its reach into the enterprise space. This included the Lumogon platform, which provides a “window” into Docker images and running containers, and provides a way to collect, query, and report on container application metadata. The second was around its Cloud Discovery service, which brings situational awareness to cloud environments not managed by Puppet.

Puppet CEO Sanjay Mirchandani wrote that the addition of Distelli will allow Puppet to “provide a comprehensive solution for automating the entire software delivery lifecycle.”

Distelli has raised nearly $3 million since its founding in 2013. Distelli will maintain its operations in Seattle, working out of Puppet’s facilities. Puppet is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and counts more than 500 employees across six offices.

Yuen noted the deal is also a way for Puppet to take advantage of Seattle's technology community.

"This move by Puppet is a way to quickly grow and strengthen their newly opened Seattle office and use this base to build out that office with talent from the Seattle market," Yuen said.
