Postman, an API toolchain for developers, raised $7 million in a Series A round from Nexus. The company will use the funding to market its products and introduce more tools.
Postman offers two products that are intended to improve API developer workflows. In 2014, the company created the Postman application. And just a couple of months ago, it released the Postman Cloud. The application is a free service and geared towards individual developers who want to build, test, and monitor their APIs. However, the Postman Cloud is a paid service that functions similarly to the application, but is meant to be used and shared among teams of API developers.
Between the two products, the company touts more than three million users and 1.5 million active monthly users, with a vast majority being developers. Developers with companies like Walgreens, Box, Intuit, IBM, VMware, and Apigee are among its users. Additionally, nine of the top ten global cloud providers use the product, and it is recommended by Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS), says Abhinav Asthana CEO and Co-founder of Postman.
With the massive amount of APIs being built, not only do developers have trouble testing APIs, but the API workflow is broken, he claims.
“In 2012, I was working as an API developer and became really frustrated with the API tools I was working with so I created Postman as a side project to help test and build APIs,” Asthana says. “Postman grew through word of mouth in the developer community and saw hundreds of thousands of users using the product.”
Postman is built for developers who want to be able to share a library of APIs with their peers on a given project. This allows DevOps teams to collaborate when designing custom software.
And this is also where Asthana claims to be different from other companies working with APIs. Many are geared solely toward documentation and public APIs like Facebook, for example. But Postman is targeted at internal applications and developer workflows.
Postman is headquartered in Bangalore, India and has more than 30 employees. It will also be opening offices in San Francisco as more focus on sales and marketing roll out.
