Platform 9, an OpenStack enterprise cloud management service, has raised a $10 million Series B round and also announced Tuesday a virtual appliance that integrates its OpenStack controller service with VMware vSphere services.

There's a hint of redundancy in the integration, as VMware bills vSphere as its cloud computing virtualization tool, and the product is widely viewed as competitive with open source toolkit OpenStack. But the move comes as little surprise, since Platform9 cofounders Bich Lee, Roopak Parikh, Sirish Raghuram, and Madhura Maskasky are all former VMware hands.

Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Platform9 first launched its service in January. The cloud-based offering remotely deploys and manages OpenStack on private servers, and will compete with OpenStack appliance products that have recently emerged from the likes of Breqwatr and Mirantis.

The new funding round, led by Menlo Ventures and joined by previous investor Redpoint Ventures, brings Platform9's total funding to $14.5 million.

For now, Platform9 remains limited to KVM environments, though in a statement the company says it is developing support for Docker, with a beta release planned for later this year.
