Pica8 said its PicOS OpenFlow-based network operating system (NOS) now supports Dell’s Z9100-ON 100G Ethernet switch. That brings the total number of 100G white box switches supported by PicOS to five, including switches from Edge-Core Networks, HPE, and Inventec. Customers have a choice of two models of Edge-Core switches, one powered by Broadcom’s Tomahawk chip or one powered by Cavium’s XPliant chip.

“Enterprises and service providers are rapidly adopting 100-Gigabit switches in their networks, and they need white box and brite box choices to minimize costs and avoid vendor lock-in,” said Niraj Jain, vice president of business development at Pica8.

On-premises enterprise cloud computing firm Cloudistics is using Dell’s 100G and 10G switches that are supported by the PicOS. CEO Najaf Husain said the 100G switches from Dell let customers scale their on-premises cloud environments to many thousands of cores and petabytes of flash storage.

Pica8’s PicOS NOS combined with 100G Ethernet switches enables customers to create customized software-defined networking (SDN) environments and avoid vendor lock-in.
