Oracle announced today it will acquire Dyn, a cloud-based domain name service (DNS) provider that translates web URLs into IP addresses. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dyn made headlines in October when it was targeted in a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that caused outages around the Internet, impacting sites like Twitter and Netflix.

Dyn’s cloud-based solution monitors, controls, and optimizes Internet applications to deliver faster access and reduced page load times.

Oracle plans to combine Dyn with the company’s cloud computing platform to provide enterprises with a more comprehensive infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) system and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering.

Dyn competitors include some big names like Akamai, Neustar, Verisign, as well as newcomers like NS1, which raised $20 million in Series B funding in October.
