Nokia has been selected by Openreach to establish an open-access fiber network aimed at connecting millions of homes and businesses across the UK. Utilizing Nokia’s One Network Platform, the initiative supports Openreach's goal of linking 25 million premises by the end of 2026, addressing the rising demand for high-speed broadband services.

The open wholesale broadband network from Openreach connects users to about 300 communication providers offering ultrafast full fiber services, including in remote rural areas. Nokia's platform is designed for flexibility and scalability, which is essential for meeting market demands while reducing the necessary infrastructure footprint.

Nokia's innovative solution features a modular data center architecture, which is intended to decrease power and space requirements by more than 50% at exchange sites. This adaptable system enables communication providers to effectively service various population densities throughout the region.

Using Nokia’s Altiplano and network domain controllers, Openreach will enhance its fiber connectivity services across multiple technologies through an Intent-Based management system. This approach significantly reduces operational complexity and support system demands by 85%, while providing real-time insights into the network’s performance.

Trevor Linney, Director of Network Technology at Openreach, stated, “This is the next step in our plans to build a future-proof, multi-service network platform. Introducing Nokia’s Altiplano will boost automation and product flexibility for our Communication Provider customers and their end-users.”

Geert Heyninck, General Manager of Broadband Networks at Nokia, remarked, “Open-access networks are the future of broadband, and we’re proud to support Openreach in expanding fiber connectivity. Meeting growing broadband demands requires scalability and flexibility, which is central to our solution's design.”

This partnership between Nokia and Openreach marks a significant development in the UK's broadband landscape, targeting enhanced connectivity and operational efficiency to support the demands of both urban and rural communities.
