An update to Mirantis’ open source private cloud platform allows users to change their infrastructure to best suit individual workloads, Mirantis CEO Adrian Ionel says.

The latest version of Mirantis Cloud Platform (MCP) is built around the idea of a tuned infrastructure stack — a pre-defined configuration template that can be edited using a tool called infrastructure model designer. This software is built on top of open source tools including Cookiecutter, Reclass, and Salt. It allows operations teams to define cluster configuration using declarative scripting.

“The pace of change is much faster with applications, new use cases, and new technologies coming out much more rapidly. So the infrastructure has to adjust much more rapidly,” said Ionel, who also co-founded the company. “MCP is the only [private cloud platform] that we are aware of that enables this level of flexibility where through pure software configuration you can choose your cloud and create specific infrastructure templates for specific workloads.”

This flexibility extends to data center hardware, Ionel added. “You can exchange components, incorporate components, [and] add new hardware without having to do a rip and replace,” he said.

The new release also includes support for Kubernetes 1.10 and OpenContrail 4.0, in addition to OpenStack Mitaka, Ocata, and Pike.

OpenStack to Multicloud

The product continues Mirantis’ evolution from a pure-play OpenStack company to an open source, multicloud provider, Ionel said. In January, the company brought him back (Ionel was its original CEO) to lead Mirantis and help customers adopt multicloud strategies.

“MCP is no longer just about or primarily about OpenStack,” Ionel said. “It’s now a much more flexible platform that allows customers to consume a variety of open source technologies and integrate them into their infrastructure seamlessly.”

MCP can include OpenStack and/or Kubernetes to support bare metal, virtual machines (VMs), and containers, along with Ceph, OpenContrail, and Calico for software-defined storage and networking.

The company in April launched a beta program for its Mirantis Application Platform to help enterprises migrate operations to the cloud. It’s based on the Spinnaker open source project initially launched by Netflix.

“So we have a complete platform aimed at enterprises realizing the full [return on investment] from cloud using open source technologies,” Ionel said.

To Edge and Beyond

The company is also “doubling down” as a product company, not a services company, he added. And to that end it’s developing an edge platform, as well as hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), multicloud, and high-performance compute (HPC) products.
