Microsoft has acquired data-privacy provider BlueTalon, which offers a unified data access control platform that includes insight into data security blind spots.

The BlueTalon product allows for data management across multiple environments including on-premises data centers and in the cloud. The platform also supports the auditing of data assets across those locations.

Rohan Kumar, corporate vice president for Microsoft’s Azure Data division, said the move will bolster its customers’ ability to manage their data assets at scale.

“The IP and talent acquired through BlueTalon brings a unique expertise at the apex of big data, security and governance,” Kumar explained in a blog post. “This acquisition will enhance our ability to empower enterprises across industries to digitally transform while ensuring right use of data with centralized data governance at scale through Azure.”

Financial terms of the deal were not released. BlueTalon will be folded into Microsoft’s Azure Data Governance business.

BlueTalon was founded in mid-2013, and has raised $27.4 million through four funding rounds. It started its work in the big data environment, providing services targeted at data systems like Hadoop. It has also provided its platform to numerous vendors including Dell EMC, which included the product in its Analytics Insight Module.
