Lumos has announced its inaugural expansion into Alabama, aiming to install over 1,300 miles of fiber optic internet in the Birmingham Metro area. This project will enhance connectivity for underserved communities and provide high-speed internet service, potentially benefiting nearly 100,000 households.

The expansion is expected to create opportunities for local residents, supporting job creation, entrepreneurship, and access to educational resources for college-bound students. Lumos CEO, Brian Stading, emphasized the alignment of this investment with Alabama's objectives to broaden broadband access and stimulate economic growth.

Stading stated, “Lumos' investment in the Birmingham community reflects our mission to empower communities. Our goal is to create a lasting impact across Alabama. Fiber optic infrastructure isn't just about internet speeds; it's about enabling opportunities for telemedicine, remote working, learning, and smart city innovation.”

Lumos will act as the first fiber provider to households and businesses in areas including Jefferson County and the City of Birmingham. Local support for the project includes a unanimous approval from the City Council of Hoover for Lumos' franchise agreement to commence construction.

Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato expressed support, stating, “We welcome Lumos to our city. We are always in favor of our residents having more options when it comes to internet providers, making Hoover a more connected city.”

The expansion plans also include a commitment to creating job opportunities in Jefferson County. Residents interested in job openings with Lumos can visit their careers page for more information. Engineering work is currently underway, and residents will be notified by mail once construction begins.
