Lumos has embarked on its inaugural expansion into Alabama, becoming the sixth state in its operational footprint. The initiative involves installing over 105,000 miles of fiber optic infrastructure, specifically targeting underserved areas to deliver high-speed internet in the Birmingham Metro region.
The new fiber internet service aims to connect residents and businesses with increased job prospects, support entrepreneurs, and enhance educational resources for students, including access to college applications and financial aid information.
CEO Brian Stading emphasized the alignment of this investment with Alabama's goals for improving broadband access and economic opportunities. “Lumos' investment in the Birmingham community reflects our mission to empower communities,” Stading stated. He noted that fiber optic infrastructure facilitates telemedicine, remote work, and smart technology applications.
This expansion positions Birmingham as a competitive economic hub, appealing to industries that depend on strong digital connectivity, such as manufacturing and healthcare.
Lumos will offer its services to households and businesses in areas including Jefferson County, Birmingham, Irondale, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Hoover. The entry into this market has garnered support from local leaders, including the Hoover City Council, which unanimously approved Lumos' franchise agreement.
Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato expressed a welcoming sentiment towards Lumos, stating, “We are always in favor of our residents having more options when it comes to internet providers.”
In addition to enhancing connectivity, Lumos' expansion is expected to create job opportunities in Jefferson County, contributing to local economic development. Individuals interested in career opportunities at Lumos can find information on their website.
Engineering work for the fiber optic network is currently underway, and full construction is set to commence shortly, with impacted residents receiving mail communication once it begins.
