Lumentum Holdings Inc. has been chosen to contribute to NVIDIA’s silicon photonics ecosystem, utilizing its high-efficiency lasers in the newly introduced Spectrum-X Photonics networking switches. This partnership seeks to reduce power consumption and improve deployment speed, which are essential for scaling Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers.

NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X and Quantum-X networking switches integrate Lumentum’s advanced laser technology to enhance resilience and energy efficiency, addressing key issues faced in AI factory scaling. Wupen Yuen, Lumentum's President of Cloud and Networking Technology, emphasized that innovations in networking power consumption can support larger AI infrastructures and facilitate a transition from copper to photonic interconnects.

This initiative underscores Lumentum's long-standing expertise in indium phosphide laser solutions, which complement its existing electro-absorption modulated lasers that power high-capacity optical transceivers for data centers. Gilad Shainer, Senior Vice President of Networking at NVIDIA, remarked on the collaborative potential to advance AI technologies further.

The partnership aligns with broader industry trends toward increasing the efficiency of AI data operations and enhancing the technological foundation necessary for next-generation data centers.
