Lockheed Martin, Nokia, and Verizon announced a successful integration of military-grade 5G technology into Lockheed Martin's 5G.MIL Hybrid Base Station. This integration enhances the ability to merge commercial 5G connections with military communications systems, which is vital for national defense.

As part of this collaboration, the three companies demonstrated improved tactical communications solutions using an open systems architecture and commercial standards. The technology aims to provide improved access to critical information, supporting military operations and ensuring effective deterrence against security threats.

John Clark, senior vice president at Lockheed Martin, emphasized the increasing importance of fast and secure communications to facilitate mission success. He noted that the relationship with Nokia and Verizon plays a crucial role in routing data throughout the battlespace efficiently.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, highlighted the adaptability of Nokia's 5G solutions, which meet defense requirements for security and efficiency while enabling interoperability with open systems. This integration enhances situational awareness and accelerates decision-making processes for military operations.

The initial integration took place at Verizon's Boston Innovation Center and Lockheed Martin's Valley Forge laboratory, followed by final testing and demonstrations in Texas. This integration included hybrid user equipment capable of switching between commercial 5G and tactical waveforms without interrupting user sessions.

The collaboration will continue to evolve, incorporating Nokia's 5G technology at Lockheed Martin's Experimental Network site in Florida. This will enhance data connectivity for warfighters, enabling new operational capabilities and improving overall military communication networks.
