Keysight Technologies, NTT Innovative Devices Corporation, and Lumentum Holdings Inc. jointly demonstrated 448 Gbps data transmission using 224 GBaud PAM4 optical technology at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC) 2025. This collaboration addresses rising bandwidth demands from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications, facilitating the development of power-efficient 3.2 terabit (Tbps) interfaces intended for future data center networks.

During this demonstration, which utilizes Keysight’s M8199B Arbitrary Waveform Generators and NTT’s frequency-domain interleaver, the collaboration showcased the capability to generate high-speed signals effectively. This achievement signifies progress in achieving higher data rates, which is crucial for maintaining the efficiency of data center operations and supporting the scalability of AI model performance.

The demonstration highlights the importance of advancing optical interconnects in facilitating AI-driven cloud infrastructure. As AI and ML applications require fast processing of larger datasets, increased data throughput becomes essential. This collaboration emphasizes a commitment to developing technologies that support operational efficiencies in data centers, resulting in reduced costs and environmental impacts.

Dr. Akimasa Kaneko from NTT noted the collaboration as an important step in evolving high-speed optical communications, while Dr. Matthew Sysak of Lumentum acknowledged the milestone in enhancing cloud infrastructure capabilities. Keysight's Dr. Joachim Peerlings emphasized the combined strengths of the organizations in propelling advancements in AI infrastructure.

The 448 Gbps joint demonstration is set to be featured at OFC 2025 from April 1-3, indicating its relevance to the future of optical communications technologies.
