Skyport Systems, the enterprise security startup that has hired up a gaggle of former Juniper and Cisco execs, has raised a $30 million Series B funding round led by Index Ventures and joined by Intel Capital, the VC arm of the chipmaking giant.
Skyport founder and CTO Michael Beesley, who left Cisco in 1997 to join then-upstart Juniper Networks as a founding member of the engineering team, has tapped his deep networks in both companies to recruit for Skyport since launching the firm nearly two years ago.
The executive team at Mountain View-based Skyport now includes CEO Stefan Dyckerhoff, VP Engineering Will Eatherton, and Chief Architect Rob Rodgers, who all served lengthy hitches at both Juniper and Cisco.
Skyport's odd man out is Corporate VP Douglas Gourlay, who merely spent a combined 16 years as an executive at Cisco and Arista.
As for the product this all-star team is cooking up, details are murky. The company describes it as "hyper-secured infrastructure," and hints that it will target enterprise application and network security. A spokesperson for Skyport declined to provide further details.
At $30 million, the Series B announced on Wednesday represents a significant jump from Skyport's $7 million in prior funding, which does not appear to have ever been announced. Previous investor Sutter Hill Ventures, where Beesley spent time as an entrepreneur in residence immediately prior to founding Skyport, also joined the new funding round.
Index Ventures' Mike Volpi, a former top executive at Cisco, will join the Skyport board of directors as part of the deal.
