Infoblox today announced the acquisition of network operating system (NOS) developer SnapRoute — for an undisclosed amount — in a bid to fill out the last remaining pieces of its emerging secure access service edge (SASE) platform.

Founded in 2015 by a group of Apple engineers who wanted to make networks more flexible, SnapRoute's cloud-native NOS now joins InfoBlox's growing software portfolio, which includes the company's BloxOne ThreatDefense and recently released BloxOne DDI platforms.

“We recognize that the future is in the cloud, and to meet customer demands for flexibility, scalability, adaptability, enhanced security, and speed, it will become increasingly important for network and security services to be cloud-native,” said Jesper Andersen, president and CEO of Infoblox, in a statement.

The acquisition of SnapRoute's CN-NOS feed into Infoblox aspirations to break into the fledgling SASE market.

In its 2019 Hype Cycle report, Gartner described SASE as a transformative technology with the potential to render SD-WAN stalwarts irrelevant in the coming years.

Infoblox claims its BloxOne ThreatDefense and DDI platforms were two parts of the SASE puzzle, but it's SnapRoute's technology, intellectual property, and talent that will help the company accelerate the development of true SASE services based on a cloud-native architecture. Its existing DDI platform consolidates domain name systems, dynamic host configuration protocol, and IP address management into a single unified platform

“Building from a cloud-native foundation is essential to providing the scalable and flexible services that businesses demand today,” said Dom Wilde, CEO of SnapRoute, in a statement. “Infoblox is the only company that has invested in building a truly cloud-native platform for networking and security services complementary to what we built at SnapRoute, and we couldn’t be more pleased to join the Infoblox team to help expand their services and capabilities.”
