Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has been awarded a $931 million contract by the US Department of Defense (DoD).

The ten-year contract will see DoD combat support division, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), deploy HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud.

The distributed hybrid multi-cloud solution will deliver a National Institute of Standards and Technology-compliant cloud environment, including on-premises and air-gapped management.

The multi-million dollar deal builds on a prototype launched for DISA last year, unifying the agency’s siloed, multiple-host environments within its DISA J9 Hosting and Compute (H&C) Directorate, with a bid to reduce its overall footprint, costs, and management complexity.

“We’ve built GreenLake to deliver a secure, unified cloud experience, and we’re honored that DISA has selected HPE to extend those capabilities to create a sovereign cloud tailored to the agency’s mission-critical needs. With this secure hybrid, multi-cloud platform, DISA can deliver innovative, future-ready managed services to the agencies it supports that are operating across the globe,” said Fidelma Russo, executive vice president and general manager of hybrid cloud and CTO, HPE.

The deal represents HPE’s latest government deal, following 2021’s $2 billion contract with the National Security Agency (NSA), also centered around Greenlake’s cloud-to-edge platform. That contract saw deployment of both HPE Apollo and ProLiant servers, aiming to expand the NSA’s use of AI and machine learning for data processing purposes.

The DoD deal similarly promises enhanced AI and data analytics for DISA, with AI training and inference capabilities available both in the cloud and the network edge for the agency.

On the edge front, IDC predicted AI would spur global spending on edge computing solutions to a $261 billion high this year, providing the basis for a nearly 14% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next few years.
