IBM Slashes 10,000 Jobs, 20% of European Workforce

IBM announced plans to cut about 10,000 jobs, or 20% of its staff, in Europe as it prepares to spin-off its lagging legacy business units, and reorient itself as a hybrid-cloud powerhouse.

The massive job cuts, which were first reported by Bloomberg based on conversations IBM had with labor representatives in Europe in early November, will impact employees in the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Italy, and Belgium.

The major workforce reduction comes less than two months after IBM CEO Arvind Krishna announced plans to ditch IBM’s Managed Infrastructure Services and Global Technology Services business units into a separate company in a bid to allow the company to be “laser-focused” on the hybrid cloud market.

Job losses will hit hardest at these units, a move obviously intended to cut costs prior to the separation from IBM proper, which the company hopes to complete before the end of 2021.

Cisco Skips Layoff Talk, Posts Q1 Beat Despite 9% Revenue Drop

Back in October, Cisco reportedly began laying off about 9% of its workforce — six months after Robbins pledged not to cut jobs in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The layoffs, first reported by FierceTelecom citing a thread on TheLayoff.com, will impact more than 7,100 employees.

And while Robbins didn’t mention the layoffs on the Q1 call, nor was he asked about the job cuts, anonymous Cisco employees expressed their displeasure on TheLayoff.com. One said the company’s bonuses were also cut in half this year. “Bonus cut in half. Large layoffs. Earnings report was outstanding. OK,” another anonymous employee posted.

A Cisco spokeswoman declined to commend on company bonuses or how many employees will be affected by the job cuts. “Over the coming weeks and months, Cisco will increase our investments in key business areas that will drive customer satisfaction and partner profitability going forward and reduce investments in others,” the spokeswoman said. “We will be restructuring parts of our business as a result.”
