Google acquired Cornerstone Technology, a software company that migrates customers’ mainframe workloads to the cloud, in yet another deal that aims to pull more enterprises onto Google Cloud Platform.

In a blog post, Howard Weale, director of transformation practice at Google Cloud, says the latest purchase will form the — wait for it — “cornerstone of our mainframe-to-GCP solutions.”

Cornerstone’s platform uses automation to convert any programming language or database into any other language or database and prepare legacy workloads for cloud-native and containerized environments. It then automates data migration into these new services-based architectures.

“Easy mainframe migration will go a long way as Google attracts large enterprises to its cloud,” said IDC analyst Matt Eastwood in the blog post. And indeed, the No. 3 cloud provider has been on a tear to move all manner of on-premises workloads into Google Cloud.

Mainframe Migration Matters

Last month it linked with IBM’s Power Systems to allow enterprises to more easily migrate on-premises, IBM-based workloads into Google’s Cloud. And late last year it scooped up CloudSimple, which migrates on-premises VMware-based workloads into public clouds.

In fact, it’s been on quite a buying spree under CEO Thomas Kurian in his first year on the job, spending billions on acquisitions to boost its enterprise offerings. In addition to the two cloud migration companies, Google’s acquisitions include no-/low-code application development platform provider AppSheet, enterprise file storage startup Elastifile, data analytics provider Looker, and security startup (and sister company) Chronicle.

While Google still has quite a ways to go before it catches up to No. 1 Amazon and No. 2 Microsoft in the cloud wars —for comparison Amazon’s fourth-quarter 2019 public cloud revenue alone exceeded Google Cloud’s full-year revenue — Kurian and company are working overtime to close the gap.

Google Cuts Cloud Jobs

However, this (expensive) push into the enterprise will cost some Google Cloud employees their jobs. The company is cutting “a small number of employees” as part of an internal reorganization.

“We recently communicated organizational changes to a handful of teams that will improve how we market, partner, and engage with customers in every industry around the globe,” a company spokesperson told SDxCentral in an email. “We made the difficult, but necessary decision to notify a small number of employees that their roles will be eliminated.”
