Fortinet is growing — both in terms of revenue and product portfolio. The network security vendor reported its second quarter 2023 financial results on Aug. 3, alongside a series of product and service updates.

For the quarter, Fortinet reported revenue of $1.3 billion for a 26% year-over-year gain as the company continues to hold strong positions across multiple network security categories. Alongside its earnings, Fortinet announced an expansion of its secure networking portfolio with the introduction of the FortiGate 90G next-generation firewall (NGFW), powered by the company's SP5 custom ASIC silicon. Fortinet also announced new SD-WAN services including underlay performance monitoring and overlay-as-a-service offerings.

"Fortinet's success lies with our broad integrated platform, our proprietary ASIC security processor, and our ability to converge networking and security both on prem and in the cloud, across a single FortiOS operating system," Ken Xie, founder, chairman and CEO of Fortinet, said during his company's earnings call.

Xie said the new FortiGate 90G is his company's first next-generation firewall and secure SD-WAN appliance that integrates the latest SP5 ASIC.

"The FortiGate 90G is fully integrated with our FortiGuard [artificial intelligence] (AI)-powered security service and has secure computing reaching up to 16 times greater than average of our competitors," Xie said.

The FortiGuard AI security service provides deep packet inspection (DPI), as well as advanced filtering for content security to help protect organizations against both known and zero-day threats.

The FortiGate 90G boasts up to 28 Gb/s for firewall throughput, with capacity for 124,000 connections per second. Of note, Fortinet also highlighted the energy efficiency of the FortiGate 90G, with power consumption of 0.87 watts per Gb/s of firewall throughput, which is well below the industry average of 25.06 watts.

SD-WAN networking consists of network overlays, commonly referred to as overlay and underlay networks. The underlay is the actual provider network and the overlay is the logical networking architecture that SD-WAN enables.

Fortinet's new Underlay Performance Monitoring Service for SD-WAN is all about helping to enable ongoing performance management. There is a service-level agreement (SLA) database for common cloud application workloads in the new Fortinet offering, designed to help ensure optimal configuration settings as well.

The overlay-as-a-service offering is all about helping to enable faster SD-WAN deployments, with configuration and administration of the overlay network managed via the FortiCloud service.

“Together with newly announced SD-WAN services, we plan to accelerate our global point-of-presence [PoP] deployments, with a dual strategy of investing in our own PoPs, as well as working with service providers," Xie said.
