Service provider Expereo acquired software vendor Border 6 to expand the capabilities of its software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) underlay platform. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Expereo initially licensed Border 6 software when it was developing its XCA platform for Internet routing optimization. The company then decided to purchase Border 6 because its algorithm for understanding Internet performance is key to the company's XCA platform, said Sander Barens, vice president of commercial development at Expereo.

When Expereo was first founded, it specialized in selling Internet access to large, global service providers like AT&T, Verizon, NTT Communications, Sprint, and Bell Canada. “What we saw and still see happening in the market is that the Internet is becoming a primary WAN medium for the enterprise,” said Barens. “In order to support our customers we had to change our market model from only selling to the carriers and service providers, to also selling directly to the enterprise.”

Expereo’s XCA platform allows service providers to provide Internet access and monitor customer traffic and applications. Expereo offers SDWAN as a managed service using Cisco’s IWAN and Viptela’s services. It also provides SDWAN services with an orchestration layer, allowing it to manage the configuration and lifecycle changes. Expereo is looking to offer the technology from other SDWAN vendors as well, Barens said.

Founded in 2004, Expereo has about 250 employees and is based in Amsterdam. The company was acquired by asset management firm Carlyle Group in September 2014 but operates independently.
