In a big win for VMware, Deutsche Telekom this week announced a new partnership to bring VMware SD-WAN by VeloCloud to an even larger audience.

In a recent blog post, Deutsche Telekom said the partnership will mean greater flexibility for international customers.

A spokesperson for Deutsche Telekom, of the 60-plus vendors on the market, VMware's VeloCloud stood out as "market leader in cloud-centric SD-WAN solutions."

VeloCloud will be offered as part of Deutsche Telekom's Smart SD-WAN service alongside competitors Silver Peak and Riverbed. The service provider also offers SD-WAN services through the company's IntraSelect SD-WAN platform which is based on Cisco Viptela.

Getting Deutsche Telekom is big deal for the growing SD-WAN vendor, said Sanjay Uppal, VP and GM of the VeloCloud business unit, in an email with SDxCentral. “They are a leader in the market, and we see this partnership as critical to the success of SD-WAN adoption worldwide and especially in Europe,” he said.

As of this year, VMware’s SD-WAN is now offered by more than 100 service providers around the world. Uppal says the addition of Deutsche Telekom will only reinforce the company’s hyperscale footprint.

VMware also has partnerships with several service providers across the European Market, one of the largest being AT&T.

Since purchasing VeloCloud in 2017, VMware has become one of the strongest performing vendors in the highly contested SD-WAN market — ranking either first or second, depending on which report you believe.

A July IHS Markit report said VMware nabbed the top spot over rival Cisco, while an IDC report published the same month ranked VMware second place behind Cisco.

Deutsche Telekom joins a growing number of telecoms to bring VeloCloud into the fold. Last month Canadian service provider OnX announced it had begun offering VMware’s VeloCloud SD-WAN.
