The National Security Agency (NSA) notified National Security Systems (NSS) owners, operators, and vendors of upcoming quantum-resistant (QR) algorithm requirements for NSS — networks that contain classified information or are critical to military and intelligence operations.

The NSA advised that a cryptanalytically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) has the potential to break current public-key systems. As part of efforts to "plan, prepare and budget for a transition to QR algorithms to assure sustained protection of NSS and related assets in the event a CRQC becomes an achievable reality," the agency will release the “Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite 2.0” (CNSA 2.0).

The algorithms in CNSA 2.0 are an update to those in the currently required Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite (now referred to as CNSA 1.0), according to an NSA announcement. The CNSA 2.0 algorithm selections — which were based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) recently announced selections for standardization for quantum-resistant cryptography — have been analyzed as secure against both classical and quantum computers and will eventually be required for NSS.
